Our new faculty affiliate, Dr. Brad Woods, has agreed to provide us with a Sociology-in-Progress Symposium, February 24 at 12:00 P.M. in LSC 376.
“The responsible conduct of research and perspectives from a social scientist working in a compliance world”
Social scientists often find themselves placed in the unenviable position of trying to navigate institutional compliance policies related to the study of human subjects, which can introduce additional obstacles when trying to capture rich, unbiased data from certain study populations. This discussion will center on the experiences and perspectives of a mixed-methods social scientist who has faced these challenges as an investigator and now works in the compliance arena. One of the many questions we will discuss is: How do we conduct research responsibly and ethically while also avoiding the bureaucratic pitfalls frequently associated with institutional compliance? To contextualize this discussion, Dr. Woods will provide examples from his research with communities impacted by the controversial coal mining method known as “mountaintop removal.”
We look forward to seeing you there!
