All Women are not Equal: A Bangladesh Perspective

Dr. Sadeka Halim is a Commonwealth Scholar who did her MA and PhD from McGill University, Canada, and a post-doctoral fellowship from University of Bath, UK with the Commonwealth Scholarship. The title of her MA and PhD thesis are Rural Development Programs and Their Impact on Women: A Bangladesh Study, and Invisible Again: Women and Social Forestry in Bangladesh respectively. Before that she completed her Bachelor of Social Sciences (BSS) and Master of Social Sciences (MSS) in Sociology from University of Dhaka securing First Class Second and First Class First position respectively. 

Her research interests are gender and development, indigenous rights, minority rights, right to information, social justice, etc. She published her research extensively in different reputable national and international journals. Dr. Halim was the first female Dean of Faculty of Social Sciences, and the director of Center for Advanced Research in Social Sciences, University of Dhaka. She has been contributing to various higher education decision making bodies like syndicate and senate member of University of Dhaka, National University, Bangladesh, and East West University, Bangladesh. She also served as among eighteen prominent educationists’ member of the National Education Policy Committee, 2009. She was also the first female Information Commissioner in Bangladesh. 

Dr. Halim served as guest professor at The University of Natural Resources and Life Science (BOKU) Vienna, and served as visiting fellow at The Queen’s University of Belfast, Ireland under The Higher Education Link Program between Department of Women’s Studies, University of Dhaka and The Queen’s University, Belfast.

Currently Dr. Halim is working as gender-adviser in Padma Railway link project, Bangladesh. She has been researcher/consultant to DFID, UNDP, OXFAM (Canada), OXFAM GB, NORAD, IFAD, SDC, Save the Children UK, Save the Children Sweden-Denmark, and USAID & ESCAP. She also has conducted a number of evaluation studies of which “Gender Mainstreaming of Policies of The World Bank, UNDP, FAO and the Line Ministries of GoB” and Needs Assessment and Costing of MDG-3 sponsored by UNDP and GED, Planning Commission, are the prominent among others.
