Edwin (Eddie) Parrott is our very first graduate of the General Sociology program we launched through CSU Online a few years ago. Congratulations, Eddie!

How did you decide to study Sociology?

I decided to study sociology because I felt that it would provide me with the critical thinking skills needed across multiple disciplines. I began as a Criminal Justice Major when I started at Illinois State University, but I was torn in between my interests in the field of mental health and law. Not knowing exactly where I wanted to go, I was advised to pick up Sociology as a major with Psychology and History as my minors. I enjoyed Sociology more than I expected because it is such a multi-faceted study, and it has left me with many options for higher education and various career paths.

Why did you choose CSU Online?

I chose CSU Online because I had actually been contemplating transferring to the campus when I was a Sophomore and Junior, but it wasn’t feasible at the time. I have always dreamt of moving to Colorado someday and CSU Fort Collins always had my attention. A good friend from my high school had nothing but amazing things to say about his experience, and so after my gap year I continued to investigate CSU to finish my final year. I didn’t have the means to finish my final year of undergrad on campus at Fort Collins, but I was open to finishing online after seeing the many interesting course offerings available.

What skills have you learned and how do you plan to apply them?

In my time at CSU I have picked up on a variety of skills and teachings. I have learned everything from preparation for job interviews, to research papers, and even overlooked aspects of learning like self-reflection. These are just a few examples, but the exposure to new ideas has been endless. I plan on applying what I’ve learned in my job search and in my career path, as well as my personal life. Simple activities and assignments like logging a gratitude journal for my Positive Psychology course have provided me with insight that can be used both professionally and for the benefit of my own well-being.

A favorite class or professor and why:

It would be very difficult for me to pick one favorite class, but there are certainly a few that stand out. My classes PSY 320 (Psychopathology), PSY 335 (Forensic Psychology), and SOC 352 (Criminology) have without a doubt been most fascinating to me personally. I have always enjoyed learning about the mind, crime, and the law. These classes introduced me to new perspectives on mental illness and crime which I think will be very useful in my future career. Aside from the enhancement of knowledge in these areas of interest, I truly enjoyed each one of these classes to the point that it didn’t feel as if I was working or doing assignments.

A favorite CSU memory:

Since my only year at Colorado State University has been through the online program, I didn’t really have any standout moments or memories. However, I did really enjoy being home to watch the CSU football games this year with my family and root for the Rams! Bowl Bound!

What are you pursuing after graduation?

After graduation I am planning to dive straight into work. I’ve been applying for jobs, and I have already had a couple of interviews. I hope to secure employment soon, likely in the mental health field, so I can gain some experience and save enough money to pursue a master’s degree in the next five years.

What hobbies, interests, or involvements do you enjoy?

I really enjoy going for long drives while listening to music or podcasts, taking my dogs for long walks, and playing video games with friends. I like to go out from time to time, but I tend to be more of a homebody. When it’s nice outside I like to run or go for long bike rides, and occasionally see if I can still kickflip on my skateboard.
