Dr. KuoRay Mao is Assistant Professor of Sociology at Colorado State University.
As a green criminologist specializing in environmental governance and natural resource management in an illiberal context, he studies the complicated relationship between economic development, environmental degradation, and the regulatory regime of the global capitalist system. Since 2015, he has examined the institutional factors that have perpetuated environmental harm throughout China’s most vulnerable populations, as well as the state and public responses to green victimization in China and East Asia.
He was awarded the Community Action Research Initiative (CARI) Award from the American Sociological Association in 2015, the 2016 Outstanding Emerging Scholar Award from the Western Social Sciences Association, the 2019 Best Journal Article Award from the American Society of Criminology Division on Critical Criminology and Social Justice, and the Best Teacher Award from the CSU Alumni Association in 2020.
His most recent research examines how resource governance in a state corporatist model interacts with community apathy toward environmental hazards and pollution.
He has published in journals such as the Journal of Agrarian Change, Society & Natural Resources, Critical Criminology, Frontiers of Earth Science, Journal of Contemporary China, and the International Journal of Offender Therapy and Comparative Criminology. Dr. Mao received his Ph.D. from the University of Kansas in 2015.
